Started as a small, rural clinic in central Haiti in 1987, Partners In Health, locally known as Zanmi Lasante, has grown and now serves 4.5 million people in some of the poorest regions of the country. In 2013, PIH built the largest university teaching hospital in Haiti, forming the new generation of doctors and nurses, while strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
PIH is the largest non-government health provider in Haiti and has been present there for over 30 years. PIH employs over 5,700 staff and supports 12 health facilities across the country.
PIH contributed to roll-out the world's largest emergency cholera vaccination campaign reaching almost 800,000 people In partnership with the Ministry of Health, and other medical NGOs.
PIH run the University Teaching Hospital of Mirebalais in central Haiti. Clinicians provide high-quality healthcare to an average of 700 Haitians each day who previously had little or no access to health care.
In 1998, PIH started the first program providing free, comprehensive HIV treatment and care in an impoverished context. Since then, 11,900 HIV-positive patients have started antiretroviral treatment.
VITAL HEALTH SERVICES
Since its creation, PIH visited 1.6 million patients, provided educational assistance to 9,400 children, delivered prenatal care to 30,000 pregnant women, and started 1,700 patients on treatment for tuberculosis.
PIH responded to hurricane Matthew by supporting the Immaculate Conception Hospital in the city of Les Cayes, a referral hospital for 1.5 million people in one of the worst affected regions.

Its original population, the Tainos, were wiped out in a matter of decades due to enslavement and susceptibility to European diseases.The Western part of the island, now Haiti, was passed from Spain to France as a result of the treaty of Ryswick in 1697, while the Eastern part that is now the Dominican Republic, remained under Spanish rule.
