Our in-depth investigation has revealed that SAMS is one of the most active and responsive healthcare charities in Syria.
Primarily run by Syrian nationals, best placed to understand and respond to this complex crisis, SAMS’ exceptionally wide reach allows them to assist people in hard-to-access areas. SAMS provided more than 2.6 million medical services last year, including in displacement camps, with an increasing sensitivity to gender-based violence and provision for psychosocial support.
EMERGENCY HEALTHCARE SERVICES
In 2016 amid violent conflict, SAMS-supported facilities provided 920,620 intensive care services to critically sick and severely injured civilians.
BASIC HEALTHCARE SERVICES
SAMS supports 60 facilities across Syria that provide primary healthcare for local populations. In 2016, SAMS participated in 7 vaccination campaigns for childhood diseases.
Last year, SAMS supported 53 ambulances to transport the injured to receive lifesaving treatment. SAMS also helps rebuild and fortify health facilities under attack, including underground structures.
To address the psychological issues induced by the war, the organization provided nearly 36,000 psychosocial care services in 2016.
SELFLESSNESS AND BRAVERY
In Syria healthcare facilities are subject to systematic and targeted attacks. Since 2015, 42 SAMS medical workers have lost their lives.
In 2016, the 66 SAMS reproductive health facilities delivered nearly 40,000 babies in constrained and dangerous conditions.
